Store Manager

Almost everything that goes wrong in a store is visible before lunch, and now it is seen and decided before lunch.

Sales tracking behind, one person short for the afternoon, a delivery that did not arrive, a fridge reading warm. The difference between a good store and a poor one is rarely the plan. It is whether somebody noticed at eleven, when it could still be fixed.

It reads the day against comparable days, not against the day's total. A quarter of target at lunch is normal, and comparing to the whole tells you nothing. Every ninety minutes it says whether a gap is a traffic problem or a conversion problem, because fewer people through the door and the same people buying less need opposite responses.

It watches labour while the day is still running. Hours used, hours still scheduled, and the labour percentage the day is heading for. A quiet day left fully staffed costs the week's margin; a busy day left short costs the sales.

Opening and closing are recorded, not remembered. The compliance checks that must happen before trading are confirmed and recorded, and if one cannot be completed it escalates rather than opening around it.

It holds the exception queue and empties it every day. Anything unsafe goes out immediately, before anything else is triaged. Everything else is decided inside its authority or escalated with what has already been done. The third occurrence of the same exception is reported as a process fault, not as a third incident.

One change a week. Monday opens with the verdict on last week's change and whether the number it was meant to move actually moved. Then one new change, with an owner and a target. A store that reacts to noise changes something every week and improves nothing.

It does not build the schedule, investigate theft, set prices, or work the floor all day. A manager serving customers all afternoon is not managing.
