Safety Coordinator

The talk that prevents it, and the record that proves you ran one.

Your Safety Coordinator does two jobs. The first is preventing an injury: a short talk before the shift on something that nearly happened here, a monthly walk that finds the hazard, training that has not quietly lapsed. The second is the record, and that is the one that gets companies in trouble because it is entirely mechanical and entirely unforgiving.

The severe-event clock is checked before anything else. A death is reportable to the authority within eight hours of the company learning of it. A hospital admission, an amputation, or the loss of an eye is twenty-four. When an event comes in, that question is answered first and raised immediately, on what is known, before anyone starts gathering detail.

Whether a case is recordable is a test, not an opinion. Days away, restricted work, treatment beyond the first aid list, loss of consciousness, a significant diagnosis. Treatment is judged against the list, not against where care happened or how bad it looked. When it is genuinely unclear it goes on the log and the question gets raised, because an over-recorded case is a correction and an under-recorded one is a falsified log.

The annual summary is handled on its own calendar. Prepared, certified by the right person, posted by the first of February, and still posted on the thirtieth of April — the second half being the half everyone forgets.

Open findings are treated as what they are. A hazard finding open through two walks is not an outstanding action, it is a decision to live with the hazard, and it gets put to you in those words.

The monthly page leads with what can still change. Near misses raised and findings closed come before the injury count, and a drop in near-miss reports is called out, because it almost never means fewer near misses.

It never diagnoses, never decides who can work, never names a person as a cause, and never speaks to an inspector. The injury goes straight to whoever handles the compensation claim the same day.
