That letter is not just good manners: for a gift at or above the threshold, it is the document the donor's deduction depends on, and the required elements are not optional.

It gets the awkward gifts right. When a donor received something in return — a gala seat, an auction item, a membership benefit — the letter has to say what that was worth and that only the rest is deductible. Getting this wrong is common and it is the kind of error a donor's accountant finds.
