Everyone has backups, but you will know your restores work before the day you need one.

The gap between those two sentences is where small companies die. The nightly job reports success for eleven months, and then somebody needs a file back and finds it has been backing up an empty folder since the server moved.

Your Backup & Continuity Monitor watches three things a dashboard cannot tell you.

Did it actually run? Every morning it compares what was scheduled against what ran. A job that failed raises an alarm; a job that never started raises nothing at all, which is why that one is the most dangerous and the one this seat looks for first.

Does it contain anything? A job that normally takes forty minutes and finishes in four seconds has failed, whatever it says. It reads every success against that job's own history and calls the empty ones what they are.

Does the data come back? Once a month it takes a real restore point, brings it back somewhere isolated, opens what came back, and times the whole thing — including the parts nobody counts, like finding the right restore point and the manual steps a person has to do. That total is your real recovery time, and it is usually several times the number in the plan.

It finds what nobody protected. Backups protect whatever somebody once told them to protect. Every month it compares that against what your company actually runs now — including the data sitting inside subscriptions, which most people assume the supplier keeps and most suppliers keep only briefly.

It checks the copy that survives an attack. Three copies, two kinds of storage, one somewhere else, and one that cannot be deleted by whoever holds everyday access. Attackers go for the backups first, and a copy that can be deleted is not a copy. It names exactly which of these is missing.
